Facts about British Gas Boilers...

  • British Gas boilers can save customers up to 40% off their heating bill by being more efficient.*
  • Boilers are equipped with new type 'intelligent' controls which maximize efficiency by adjusting the start time to enable the house to reach the right temperature at the right time.
  • Highest efficiency can be achieved by replacing a boiler that is over 15 years old.
  • New regulations in building state that new boiler installations, where possible, must be higher efficiency condensing type.
  • These boilers convert more than 90% of the fuel into heat.
  • They can also save you up to £240 per year and reduce carbon dioxide emissions.*

Types Of Boilers

Condensing Boilers

Condensing boilers are very high efficiency in that they turn more fuel into heat by catching wasted heat from the flue by a highly effective heat exchanger. These types of boilers have been around for a few years and whilst are more expensive to buy do pay for themselves through lower energy bills.

New Condensing boilers are over 90% efficient compared to around 70-80% for a conventional type boiler.

Combi Boilers

A combi boiler (instantaneous) is widely used and heats water on demand, although not as efficient as a condensing boiler they can be a cheaper to install.

A combi boiler (condensing instantaneous) boiler is a good compromise between a standard combi & condensing boiler above as they have higher efficiencies.

A combi (storage) boiler is a type of Instantaneous boiler to provide faster hot water. The boiler has a hot water reserve within a storage tank to give better hot water delivery but is dependant upon the size of water store.

Combined Primary Storage Unit - Similar to a combi storage boiler above this holds a far greater amount of water (around 80 litres) which gives much larger flow rate to taps & radiators heating them quickly.

Back Boilers

Older type back boilers that reside in the fireplace should be replaced with newer type high efficiency condensing boilers, in most cases back boilers should not be sold. There are exceptions if it's not practical or too expensive, you can then fit one as long as it's 78% efficient.

How Efficient Is Your Boiler?

Boilers are rated by how efficiently they turn fuel into heat, older boilers can be a as little as 60% efficient whilst newer boilers are over 90%, this could result in a significant saving in fuel cost & reduce levels of carbon dioxide, the gas that causes climate change. Select your boiler above to see it's rating.

Tips for Buying Boilers

  • Remember, condensing boilers are the most efficient and could save you the most money in the long run even though they are the most expensive.
  • Do consider having your boiler repaired if it's under 15 years old, you could get a couple of more years out of it yet.
  • Do not try a DIY job, there is strict legislation covering gas & boilers.
  • Condensing boilers help reduce carbon dioxide emissions which will in turn reduce the effect of global warming.
